DEATH TAKES FINE CITIZEN

Phillip Orth, Sexton at St. Joseph's for 25 Years Dies at Hospital.

Death yesterday afternoon, claimed one of Elwood's most respected citizens, Philip Orth, 78, who passed away at 3:45 o'clock at the Mercy Hospital where he had been since last Friday. he had been in failing health for some time and an oxygen treatment was administered following his entry into the hospital, but physicians and his family despaired of his recovery. He had been lingering between life and death for the last few days, and his children were all at his bedside when the end came.

Sexton at St, Joseph's

Mr. Orth was a native of Campbell County, Kentucky, but moved his family to Elwood in 1903, following a few weeks stay here alone. For over twenty-five years he had been employed as sexton for St. Joseph's Church of which he was a member, and janitor of the parochial school.

Following the erection of the Mercy Hospital, Mr. Orth was made janitor there, but was forced to give up the position about five years ago on account of failing health. His son, George took over his father's duties at the hospital and is at present, employed by that institution.

Made Many Friends.

During Mr. Orth's thirty-three years in this city, he made a multitude of friends and won the respect of old and young alike. Children at the parochial school her have grown up under his watchful eyes; the trees surrounding the church and parish house all knew his planting; the bell that tolled each Sunday morning, did so at his bidding; all these and hundreds of friends of the kindly, old man mourn his passing.

Five Children Survive.

The body of Mr. Orth was removed to the Copher and Fesler Funeral Home last evening and taken to the home at 1315 South B street today.

Surviving the well known man are his five children: George, Henry, John, Julia, and Anna. All live at home with the exception of Henry, who is holding an important post with a Michigan telephone company at Menominee, on the upper peninsula. George is employed at the Mercy Hospital, John is with the Moore Sales Company, Julia has for a number of years been chief operator with the Florence Cooper Beauty Shop, and Anna has remained at home with her father. A sister, Angeline, of California, Kentucky, also survives.
