A Funeral of which the Fifth Generation was Present
The funeral of Mrs. Letice Davis was held at the house of her daughter, Mrs. Lucinda L. Higley, last Wednesday. The services were conducted by Rev. Wm. Spencer, pastor of the Baptist church, of which the deceased was a member for forty-five years. He was assisted by rev. C. S. Agan of the Congregational church. A quartet of the choir of the Baptist church sung appropriate selections. The brief allusions to the life of Mrs. Davis by Rev. Mr. Spencer, were most appropriate. There was a large delegation present, including relatives and neighbors: Nelson A. Davis and family of Florence, the only son living, B. M. Couch of Northampton, a son-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark of Northfield Farms, a daughter, Mrs. Esther Davis, of South Lee, a daughter-in-law, L. B. Moore and daughters of Tyringham, E. E. Moore and family of Great Barrington, M. T. Moore and wife of Pittsfield, Lawyer M. E. Couch of North Adams, Mr. Edwin Nye and wife of Worcester, grandchildren of the deceased. The immediate relatives were about all present except Mr. George F. Bassett and wife of Ladylake, Florida, another son-in-law. There was a large number of old neighbors present who had always known the deceased. The interment was in the cemetery on the old farm near Yokum pond, where Mrs. Davis was born and always lived until about twenty-five years ago, and where her parents and husband and other relatives are buried. N. A. Davis of Florence, had a cement wall built around the cemetery a few years ago and it is properly cared for. Mrs. Davis lived with her daughter, Mrs. Higley, the past twelve years, where she received all the care and attention possible. Mr. Davis, of Florence, coming frequently to see his mother. Mrs. Davis was in the 46th year of her widowhood. She raised a large family, four sons and five daughters, only four of whom are living. She was an industrious, good mother, and kept her family together until able to care for themselves. Being a zealous member of the Baptist church, a few years ago she presented the church with triple lamps to increase the light in the church. She was the oldest person in town. She led an exemplary life and was held in the highest estimation by all who knew her. Mrs. Davis’s maiden name was Snow. She and a sister were left to their own resources when quite young. She married Austin Davis at the age of fifteen and was left a widow when quite young.
