Fireman Samuel Baker, a pipeman at Engine House No. 4, 5th and Chestnut Sts, dropped dead of a heart attack at 4pm Thursday at the lake plant of the Ruberoid Co., foot of Sassafras St, where he had arrived a few minutes before to help fight a "flash" fire in a still room.
He would have been 54 years old on March 11.
The veteran fireman resided with his brother Richard at 1864C Apt 3, Buffalo Rd, known as the "Harbor Homes" project,
He was stricken after assisting three fellow fireman from the same engine house in running a hose line to the second floor of the building to get at the fire which was smoldering around pipe casings.
Junior Capt. Joseph Greulich and Pipemen Charlie Weber and Hugh Consider were standing beside Baker when he was stricken. They caught him as he started sinking towards the floor.
The headquarters inhalator squad, iron lung and an ambulance from Hamot Hospital were summoned, but Baker was dead when the ambulance arrived. He was pronounced dead by the intern physician who accompanied the ambulance. Dr. Charles Schaaf had given Baker first aid and assistance was given by a Red Cross unit.
Warren W. Wood, county coroner, announced after brief examination and investigation that an inquest would not be necessary.
Faulty asphalt is believed to have started the blaze....
....Mr. Baker was the son of the late Samuel and Mary Baker and was born in Erie where he spent his entire life.....
