Private Alfonzo McKissack, born 7 Jan 1921, was the son of William and Allie Beth (Blackman) McKissack of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. Allie Beth was William's second wife. His first wife was Bessie.
Alfonzo's mother died of pulmonary TB and flu 26 Jul 1924 at about age 27 when Alfonzo was 3 years old.
In the 1930 census 9-year-old Alphonso is living with his widowed father 58, half-siblings Cordelia 24, and Maurice 22, and brother William jr 10, at 1810 Heiman Street in Nashville. His father is a barber.
Alfonzo's father died from a coronary occlusion 25 Feb 1936 at the age of 64 when Alfonzo was 15.
In the 1940 census (early in the year) 19-year-old Alfonzo is living with his sister Cordelia 34, still at 1810 Heiman in Nashville. Alfonzo is a painter. By October when he filed his draft registration he was living at 2409 Merry Street. Laura McKissack, at the same address, was listed as the "person who would always know his address". Since Alfonzo was married at the time of his enlistment in 1942 we can assume Laura is his wife and that Alfonzo married Laura sometime during 1940.
Alfonzo enlisted 15 Sep 1942 at Camp Forrest, Tennessee. He'd had four years of high school and was married. His civil occupation was listed under production of industrial chemicals. He was assigned to the 4410th Quartermaster Service Company.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Tennessee show McKissack, Alfonzo, Private from Davidson County as DNB (Died Non-Battle) 12 Aug 1945 some 96 days after the end of hostilities on VE day 8 May 1945.
Alfonzo's US WWII Hospital Admission Card File says he was admitted for a broken pelvis and lacerations from a vehicle accident in Aug 1945.
