30 October 1944

Due to weather conditions at the IP and interference by preceding Wings, our formation integrity was broken, forcing 19 aircraft to bomb the Hamburg Oil Refinery by PFF and eight others to attack Uterson, Germany. No enemy aircraft were encountered, flak at the target was heavy but inaccurate. One 506th Squadron aircraft did not return, with flak being suspected as the cause.
Without copying the entire report, one of the three men who survived testified that the plane exploded; another said it did not. They did say that they ran into heavy weather and were flying on instruments. Another plane crossed in front of them and the prop wash flipped them over and the plane spun into the ground from approximately 28,000 feet. Sgt Fuller stated that Barefoot and Garza were new to our crew. Barefoot was riding the nose turret in order to complete the final mission of his tour. He was killed.
The three men who survived the plane going down, were captured by the Germans and were taken to POW camps.
