Matilda C. Fox was born in Dec 1867 in Pennsylvania to parents Henry and Catherine Fox, both of whom were born in Germany.
Matilda was a sister to the following known siblings: Henry, Helena, and Casper.
On Jun 30, 1885, in St. Benedict Catholic Church, Matilda married Francis "Frank" Dietrick, born in Pennsylvania (1859-1925). Francis was a son of John Adam Dietrich, born in Bavaria (1811-1890), and Elizabeth Sherdon, born in France (1816-1888).
Matilda and Francis settled into a life of farming in Carroll, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. It is reported they had thirteen children; the following are twelve known children: Henry, Edwin, Regina, Lucinda, Callustus, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Rosalia, James, Gilbert, John and Ruben.
Two years before this remarkable woman died in 1959, a newspaper article was written about her in 1957: "Mrs. Matilda C. Dietrich - very well-known Northern Cambria area resident, will observe her 90th birthday Monday of next week, December 16 [1957.] Mrs. Dietrich, mother of 13 children, four of whom are still living, was born and reared and has spent all her life in this area. She is presently living with a daughter, Mrs. Ralph [Regina] Nagle, Dysart R.D. [This is the St. Augustine area.} Mrs. Dietrich was b. on Dec 16, 1867, near Patton, a daughter of the late Henry and Catherine Fox, pioneer settlers in this area. As a young girl she recalled that the only building where the Borough of Patton now stands was the Marks Mill. Just a wooded wilderness at that time, Mrs. Dietrich also recalled the many times she covered the ground where Patton now stands, in bringing the cows home. She also has a keen memory of her father walking to and from Hollidaysburg on the weekends. He was employed there. Mrs. Dietrich, herself, at the age of 10 years, walked daily from her home near Patton to summer school at St. Benedict's Parochial School, Carrolltown. It was there she was taught the German language by the nuns who staffed the school. Mrs. Dietrich was quite active in rug making, knitting, and sewing until about a year ago when ill health forced her to discontinue these activities. The well-known area lady and the late Francis [Frank] Dietrich were married June 30, 1885, in St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Carrolltown. Mr. Dietrich died in 1925 after the couple was married 40 years. They spent all of their married life on their farm near Baker's Crossroads in East Carroll Twp. Following her husband's death, Mrs. Dietrich has been making her home with her children, and has been residing with her daughter, Mrs. Nagle, for the past several years. Children still living are: Mrs. Nagle, mentioned above [Regina, Mrs. Ralph Nagle]; Gilbert, married to Edna Kline (d/o Peter and Bertha Warner Kline); and John. (Gilbert and John are both of Akron.) Elizabeth of Allison Park, PA. There are 47 grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Dietrich is a member of the Altar-Rosary Societies of both St. Benedict's in Carrolltown, and St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Augustine. A family dinner is planned at the Nagle home in honor of Mrs. Dietrich next Monday."
