He was the son of Fielding Henry Jones Jr. and Lillie Pitts Jones, born on Sept 27, 1916 in Rushville, Buchanan Co., MO. He was commissioned July 1942 at Kelly Field Texas and went overseas in Feb 1943. He was a member of the 315th Fighter Squadron "The Crusaders", in the 324th Fighter Group. He flew over 111 sorties in the African and Sicilian campaigns. He was shot down in Sicily and was rescued after floating at sea for over 5 days. He was later killed in action in Italy in April 1944. He left behind his parents and a brother, Ernest Jones, who was an aviation cadet. Also left to remember him and mourn his loss were two very close cousins, Willard Alexander Smith, and Harland Aubrey Smith. They grew up together, and spoke fondly of Lester throughout their remaining years.
