Thomas A. Dennis was born on February 28, 1848, in Madison County, Ohio, to William B. Dennis (1818-1904) and Rachel Margaret Adaline Dennis (1822 - 1925). Of their ten children, Thomas was the first-born.

CIVIL WAR SERVICE IN THE 94TH REGIMENT OF ILLINOIS VOLUNTEER INFANTRY:
During the American Civil War, Private Thomas A. Dennis enlisted on January 26, 1864, at the age of sixteen to serve for up to three years in the 94th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry within the U. S. Army. He served in that Regiment until July 17, 1865, two months after the surrender of the principal Confederate armies. On the same day, July 17, 1865, Private Thomas A. Dennis was transferred to Company "H" of the 37th U. S. Infantry Regiment in which he served on occupation duty in Texas until May 15, 1866, when he was mustered out of the U.S. Army at Houston, Texas.

MARRIAGE AND THREE SONS: In 1869, Thomas A. Dennis wed Martha Ann "Mollie" (Kiger) Dennis (1850-1931) of McLean County, Illinois, the daughter of Civil War veteran John E. Kiger (1821–1863) and Frances Jane (Barnard) Kiger Scott (1829–1916). Together Thomas and Mollie Dennis raised three sons, (1) Lawson E. Dennis (1871–1923), (2) Frank Dennis (1876-1963), and (3) Charles "Charlie" Dennis (1884–1885). whose Find a Grave Memorials are linked below to one another and to those of their parents.

DEATH AND INTERMENT: Thomas A. Dennis died on August 21, 1928, at Normal in McLean County, Illinois, and was interred several days later at nearby Pennell Cemetery in Towanda, McLean County, Illinois.
