Elijah Ensminger was the son of John S. Ensminger and Margaret Ballard. On Aug. 7, 1856, he married Nancy Jane Andrews.

On July 26, 1862, he married Clarinda Lenie Oldham.

Clarinda and Nancy Jane were cousins.
