Susan Iona (Susie) Bass Shattuck did not have any children of her own, so she took William D. (Billie) Meiers under her wing and treated him as if he was her own son, and William D. (Billie) Meiers made the funeral arrangements for her and her husband, Walter Randolph (Dolph) Shattuck.

Mrs. Susie Iona Shattuck, 89, 619 N. Ash St., pioneer resident in this area, died at her home Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of West Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Burton, pastor of First Baptist church officiating.
Burial will be in Carlsbad Cemetery with arrangements in charge of West Funeral Home. Pall bearers will be Wesley Stewart, George Ed Pendleton, Walter Thayer Sr., Collin Gerrells Jr., Randy Middleton and Jamie Lucas. All old time friends and nephews are to consider themselves as honorary pallbearers.
"Aunt Susie" Shattuck, as she was known by her many friends, was born Feb. 11, 1882 near Uvalde, Tex. She moved with her parents' family to Eddy County in 1892, settling on Black River. She was married to the late Walter Randolph Shattuck in Carlsbad Oct. 3, 1900.
They ranched on Dark Canyon and Dog Canyon for many years, retiring in 1946.
After retiring, Mr. and Mrs. Shattuck moved to Otis. He died August 5, 1950, Mrs. Shattuck then moved to Carlsbad, making her home at 619 N. Ash St., where she lived until her death. She was a member of Otis Baptist Church.
Surviving are two brothers, Holland Bass of Long Beach, Calif., and Fred Bass of Perris, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Stewart and Mrs. Eva Henderson, both of Las Cruces.
