FINAL TRIBUTE PAID MRS. JENNIE PETERSON
IN VARNA SERVICE
Funeral services were held Monday, September 3, at 2 p.m. in the First Lutheran Church of Varna for Mrs. Jennie C. Peterson, 81, who passed away at Peterson home in Varna Friday evening, August 31, 1951, following a brief illness. Rev. Roy W. Johnson, pastor of the First Lutheran Church of Granville, officiated at the services and interment followed in Salem Cemetery (First Lutheran Cemetery #1), north of Varna, by the side of her husband, Nels John Peterson who preceded her in death in 1933.
Mrs. Peterson was born March 12, 1870, on a farm on southern Putnam county, near the former settlement of Oxbow, located near the present site of Caledonia corners.
She was a daughter of John E. and Christina Holmstrom. She grew to womanhood in the eastern part of Marshall county, the family for a time near Wenona, and later removing to the Varna community, where she was joined in marriage on December 13, 1890, to Nels John Peterson.
To this union were born 12 children, six sons and six daughters, a daughter and two sons dying in infancy. Surviving are the remaining nine children, Ethel, (Mrs. Ralph) Gustafson, Roy Peterson, Oliver Peterson, Beulah (Mrs. Raymond) Modro, and Della Mae (Mrs. Wayne) Lundgren, all of Varna, Mrs. Gail Bergsten of Rockford, Mark Peterson of Wenona, Pearl (Mrs. Floyd) Austin of Lacon, and Murray
Peterson at Magnolia; also nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters also survive; Ira Holmstrom of Colorado Springs, CO; John and George Holmstrom, both of Wenona; Mrs. Ella Sprague of
Bloomington, IL; and Mrs. Hannah Monk of Cleveland, OH; in addition to a large number of nieces, nephews and other relatives, many of whom were also present at the Holmstrom-Esterdahl family reunion on Sunday preceding the day of the funeral services.
