ABRAM REQUA

Abram Requa, an old resident of Brooklyn, died at his home, No. 440 Gates-ave., Monday night from heart disease. Mr. Requa was born in 1818 in New York City. He was educated in this city, and soon after his education was completed he accepted a professorship in the Irving Institute of at Tarrytown, New York, where he remained several years. After leaving Tarrytown he went to Baltimore, where he edited “The Baltimore Clipper.” While in that city he engaged actively in politics, and was offered the Consulship at Honolulu, which he refused. Soon after the war he returned to New York and became associated with the Five Points Mission. He was the financial agent of this society for the twenty-one years preceding his death.

Mr. Requa devoted his entire time to working for the interests of the mission. Ever since his connection with the society he has faithfully and earnestly performed his duties in connection with it. He was a member of the Nostrand Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church of Brooklyn for a number of years, but owing to a change of residence he attended the Honson Place Methodist Episcopal Church for the last six months of his life.

When still a young man he married Elizabeth P. Lyon, a daughter of James H. Lyon. Five children were born to them, three of whom, together with his wife survive him.

The funeral will be held this evening at the home of his daughter, No. 245 Madison-st., Brooklyn. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Parsons, assisted by the Rev. A. H. Goodenough, the Rev. D. Sanford, superintendent of the Five Points Mission and the Rev. J. W. Selleck, assistant superintendent of the mission.
