MRS. JESSIE D. PEAKE SUMMONED BY DEATH

This community has been greatly saddened by the news of the passing away of one of our best known and most loved women, Mrs. Jessie D. Peake, which occurred at her home in this city on Monday night, Nov. 18, 1929, at eleven o'clock, following an extended illness with a complication of troubles.

Everything that loving hands and medical skill could do to restore her to health was done, but to no avail, and the loving and all-wise Father called her to her eternal home where suffering and sorrow are not known.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. Claude E. Sayre, were held at St. Andrew's Episcopal church on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, and spoke plainer than words of the love and esteem for this good woman, as well as sympathy for the sorrowing ones.

Jessie Day, daughter of H. H. and Rebecca Ann Day, was born in Belmont, Belmont county, Ohio, on May 10, 1856, and at the time of her demise her age was 73 years. 6 months and 8 days. When but one year old she came with her parents to Lucas county, Iowa, living for a few years on a farm north of this city. She then came to Chariton and this place has since been her home.

On December 15, 1874, she was united in marriage to Mr. John Fletcher Smith. To them two children were born, Mrs. Nellie Storie, of Chariton, and Charles Smith, of Denver, Colorado, both of whom have been with their mother during her illness and have cared for her with a tender devotion.

Mr. Smith died in July, 1888, and on October 18, 1892, Mrs. Smith was married to Mr. L. C. Peake, who passed away but a few years ago on January 8, 1927. For many years she conducted an art and needle work establishment which she disposed of about two years ago.

When quite young she united with the M. E. church, and was an active worker in the same until she transferred her membership several years ago to St. Andrew's Episcopal church, in which she has taken a great interest and has devoted much time to it's activities. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem and Rebekah orders, and was one of the original members of the Chariton Thimble club.

During all the years of her residence in Chariton she made friends of all with whom she came in contact and we do not believe that she had a single enemy. She had a sunny disposition and genial manners, and always had a smile and pleasant word of greeting for all.

She will be greatly missed in the community and the heartfelt sympathy of all will be extended to the sorrowing son and daughter, and the five grandchildren, Mrs. Louise Shaw, of Chapin, Miss Jessie Storie, of Algona, Dr. David Q. Storie, of Chariton, Charles Smith Jr. and Margaret Dawn Smith, of Denver, Colorado.
