Mable Burcham Hamburger

Funeral for Mable Burcham Hamburger, 93, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Koehn, pastor, officiating.

She died Friday, July 23, 2010, in Lawton.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, Weatherford, under direction of Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service.

She was born June 11, 1917, near Mangum, to William Frederick and Sarah Amelia Davis Burcham. She married Earl W. Hamburger on May 25, 1940. He died Sept. 6, 2004. She graduated high school at White Flat in Greer County and received her Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees at Southwestern Oklahoma State Teachers College. She taught four years in high school English at White Flat and Roosevelt and 30 years in elementary in Weatherford and Lawton. In Lawton, she taught at Lincoln, Jackson, Taft, Kuntz and Woodrow Wilson elementary schools.
She was a charter member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and served as director of the first Bible school in 1961 with 100 children and 20 teachers. She served various other offices in the church, including president of the United Methodist Women who equipped the new church and delivered Mobile Meals.

She was a member of Oklahoma Education Association, and a life member of National Education Association. She was past president of Comanche County Retired Educators Association, past president of Xi chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma and Rho Chapter of Kappa Kappa Iota. She was a china painter, collected paper weights, sugar shells, sea shells and with her husband, collected clocks and antiques.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law: Dr. Kenneth E. and Jane Hamburger, Bellvale, N.Y., and Steven G. Hamburger, Falls Church, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, the Rev. Carolyn Sue and Campbell G. Long, Lawton; five grandchildren and their spouses: Kate and Jim Temple, Winchester, Tenn.; Daniel and Jennifer Hamburger, Alabaster, Ala.; Rachael and Dustin Marco, Lawton; Garth and Shanel Long, Elk Ridge, Utah; and Cynthia Grace and Michael Gowin, Tulsa; eight great-grandchildren: Sam and Sarah Temple, Blakelee and Tristan Marco, Lois, Joshua, Grant and Sophia Grace Hamburger, Lillian Grace Long; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Bob Wayne; her parents; six sisters: Myrtle Dudek, Blanche Cox, Doris Rude, Pearl Burcham and Grace Burcham; and five brothers: Sidney, Davis, Scott, Carl and Bill Burcham.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Becker Funeral Home.
