Ellen Alice Spencer was born before the railroad came to Utah, making her a native Pioneer. Daughter of Howard Orson and Louisa Lucy Catherine Cross Spencer. She married Josiah Miller Hoyt 10 March 1882 in the St. George Temple.

Josiah died just a few weeks before her last child was born, so she did many jobs to keep her large family going. She took in washing and ironing and was a Postmistress.

She could find something to cook when no one else thought there was anything in the house.

Harriet, her youngest child, brought her whole class home from school one day because she thought her mom had forgotten her birthday and she wanted a party. Ellen made pie dough and sprinkled it with cinnamon and sugar for a treat. Harriet said that her mom never did bawl her out for that even though it had been raining and was very muddy.

I remember my great grandmother as a fun person to visit. I loved to climb in her cherry tree and eat oatmeal that she made which she put in a beautiful bowl for me.

Great Grandma, you left a legacy for all of us of thrift and and the knowledge that we can go on against many odds.

You wrote in my grandma Harriet's autograph book in 1912: "Do not spend unearned money. The secret to success is learning to deny yourself." [paraphrased]

Thanks for all you are and were.
Love, Sandra Barton Gwilliam
