Presley J.L. Martin was born in Ohio Township (Newburgh) Warrick County, Indiana, the 9th and last child to live beyond birth of Commissioner Charles F Martin and Laura Francis Arnold Martin. A birth announcement in the Boonville Standard on January 7, 1898 reported "County Commissioner Chas Martin, of Ohio Township, while attending to his official duties yesterday in Boonville, was made supremely happy. His wife presented him at birth with another 14 pound boy." (14 lbs!) Sadly, Presley was just 2 years of age when his mother died in childbirth leaving a grieving father and 7 older brothers and sisters. In the early century, the family moved temporarily to Louisville where the older boys attended school. We see in early census reports that Presley lived with and was raised by various of his siblings. His obituary says he graduated from Benjamin Harrison law school at Indianapolis and was admitted to the Warrick County bar in 1928. He began his law practice in Boonville in an office with his older brother Warren W. Martin who would later became a judge. Presley was also connected with the attorney general's office in Indianapolis.
Presley left his wife of 18 years, Josephine M Voyles Martin at his death, as well as 4 brothers and two sisters. They had no children.
