George Iverson enlisted in the regular Marine Corps on January 22, 1943. He joined the Fourth Signal Company and was transferred to Company B, First Battalion, 24th Marines on February 21, 1944. He was promoted to corporal in the spring of 1944, and landed with the company on Saipan. Iverson was wounded on June 17, evacuated, and transferred to a Navy hospital in July.

Corporal Iverson returned to the company in time for the battle of Iwo Jima. He led a squad on Iwo until his death on February 25, 1945.

He was survived by his mother, Mrs Lillie Iverson.
