Clarence Franklin HInshaw was born on a farm near Athol, Smith County, Kansas, on Jan. 25, 1900. He and his parents moved to a farm in Banner township, Smith County, when he was quite young. He attended Spring Creek School.
In 1923, he was united in marriage to Mabel Irene Farmer, also of Banner township. To this union was born one son, Marion Paul Hinshaw.
Clarence and Mabel moved onto a farm in Banner township which at one time belonged to his grandfather, John Owings Duer. During his lifetime of farming, he lived through the transition from farming with horses to tractors and modern machinery. Clarence and Mabel continued to lived at this location until Clarence retired from farming. In 1978, they moved to a home in Smith Center.
Clarence learned to bowl in later life and bowling became one of the things that he liked most. He also enjoyed traveling to California to be with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a lifelong fan of baseball, having played some “pasture ball” in his youth. When television became available he became an avid fan of game shows and sports events.
Clarence and Mabel became members of the Presbyterian Church in Smith Center, and Clarence was an active member at the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents Elton Grand and Linda “Myrtle” Duer Hinshaw; sisters Alice Irene who died in infancy and Rachel Ellen McKenzie; and brother Archie Elton Hinshaw.
He is mourned by his son Marion, daughter-in-law Frances, grandson James Elton, granddaughter Peggy Anne Sepulveda and husband Robert and great-grandchildren Amber, Sage, and Eric Sepulveda, all of Riverside, California; and two nieces Janet Hinshaw of Denver and Kathy Hinshaw Anderson and husband Ron of Del Norte, Colo.; sister-in-law Hazel Hommon of Smith Center; plus a host of other friends and relatives.
Clarence died on Feb. 9, 1990 at Long Term Care in Smith Center at the age of 90 years and 15 days. Rev. Brad Hansen officiated the funeral services Feb. 10, 1990 at Simmons Chapel, Smith Center. Donna Ayres and Lynne Devlin were the vocalists and Barbara Haresnape was the accompanist. Casket bearers were Dennis Hommon, Harold Ice, Francis Ice, David Hommon, David Johnson and Frank Brouhard. Burial was in the Gaylord cemetery, Gaylord, Kansas.
