When a very small child she moved with her parents and older brother, Clarence, to a farm five miles southwest of Smith Center, and spent the rest of her early age she joined and was baptized in the United Brethern church, and was still a member of that church. Rachel was a lover of flowers, that being her hobby, and many came to her home to see her plants and flowers. On February 16, 1926 Rachel was united in marriage to Frank L. McKenzie of the Crystal Plains neighborhood. Their first home was with Frank’s brother, Fred, south of Lebanon. They all later moved to a farm five miles southeast of Smith Center. Rachel and her husband moved into Smith Center where Rachel clerked several years at the E.E. Matson store. They moved to Lincoln, Nebr. and while Frank attended barber school Rachel worked in a store, and continued her work when returning to Smith Center. They spent one year in Denver, Colo. While there she worked in a drug store. Returning home she worked at Cy’s drug store, and continued her work there for 14 years. This past year she had to discontinue her work because of illness. She loved her work, loved meeting the public and made many friends. Several years ago she suffered crippling arthritis, but kept on with her work. Those who preceded her in death are her husband, Frank, in April 1961, her father, Elton G. Hinshaw, in October 1958 and her little sister, Alice Irene Hinshaw in July 1908.Those left to mourn her departure are her aged mother, Mrs. Myrtle Hinshaw of the home, brother Clarence and wife, Mabel, of Smith Center, brother, Archie and wife, Marie, and nieces Kathy and Janet of Denver, Colo.; a nephew, Marion Paul Hinshaw and wife, Frances, their children Peggy and James Elton of Riverside, Calif.; many cousins, other relatives and friends.Final rites were held from Simmons chapel in Smith Center Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George Wattenbarger officiating. Lawrence Kern was vocalist, Mrs Vi Rush accompanist.Nyrle Merriweather, Waldean Hooper, Otto Naumann, George Weltmer, Marvin Hooper and Wayne Hommon were pallbearers. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
