EDWIN NEUHAUSER, HURT IN MISHAP TAKEN BY DEATH
Edwin Neuhauser, 85, prominent local man and lifelong resident of this community, died between 11 p.m. and midnight Tuesday in the Turtle Creek Convalescent home in Fort Wayne where he had been a patient since July 9. While his condition has been poor, death was rather unexpected, members of the family said.
Mr. Neuhauser was seriously injured in a traffic accident 2 1/2 miles north of Berne on May 16. He received a broken hip and severe lacerations and was in Lutheran hospital in Fort Wayne until transferred to the convalescent home. He had been in serious condition since the accident.
It was not immediately established today if Mr. Neuhauser’s death would be classified as a traffic fatality or through other causes.
Personnel at the convalescent home said Mr. Neuhauser appeared in normal condition at 11:15 p.m. yesterday and at midnight when they checked again they found him dead.
The Allen county coroner will conduct an autopsy and issue a verdict. If his death is ruled due to the traffic accident injuries, his death will be charged in Adams county as the accident occurred in that county.
Mr. Neuhauser was manager of the Adams County Farm Bureau Co-Op for 12 years and during this time became known over a wide area.
He was born in French township, January 25, 1883, a son of Jacob and Rosiana Steiner Neuhauser. He was married to Martha Lehman March 2, 1910. Following their marriage the couple lived in Vera Cruz where Mr. Neuhauser managed the Riverside Mills Company for nine years. They then moved to the farm in French township where they resided for 21 years. In 1940 they moved to Berne and after retiring as Co-Op manager, he was custodian at the First Mennonite church for a number of years. In recent years he was retired but kept busy in raising truck crops and in odd jobs.
