Vada was born in 1915, the daugher of 15-year-old Ava Jolliff and 23-year-old Will Huddleston. They were never married and Will never acknowledged her as his daughter.
In May 1917 Ava married Hobert Miller, but she soon left him and went back home, where she contracted TB from her brother.
Ava was 18 when she died of TB in 1918; Vada was 3. She was raised by her Jolliff grandparents. After her grandma Jolliff died in 1929, she and her grandpa Jolliff went to live with his son, Aaron. Then he died in 1930 and Vada, a young teenager, stayed with her uncle Aaron.
