Baylis Maxwell Rolater was born May 15, 1851, in Pendleton, South Carolina (Anderson County), one of at least eleven children born to John Rolater (1812-1903), a German immigrant, and Melissa McCrary (1823-1896). Baylis had the following siblings: Thomas Sloan, Colonel Hayne, Nicholas, Edmund Morton, John Crosby, Mary Carolina, Miles Newton, Anna Rossie, Oscar Carlisle, and Joe Brown. He was a farmer.

On April 27, 1876, Baylis married Nancy Ann Horton, who was born in March 1851 in Georgia, one of 11 children born to William Franklin Horton and Rebecca Catherine Woodbridge. Bayliss and Nancy had ten known children: Lela Brown, Fannie Mae, Horace Maxwell, Allie Ola, Carrie P., Carroll P., Dee Forest, Zula Katy, Myrtle Nannie, and Claud Neel.

In 1900, Baylis and Nancy were both age 49 and were living on a farm they owned in Justice Precinct 1, Fannin County, Texas. Their household included their children: Lela B, age 22; Fannie M., age 20; Horace M, age 19; Allie O., age 17; Carol P., age 15; Carrie P., age 15; Dee F., age 13; Jula K., age 11; and Myrtle M., age 8.

Nancy died in 1925 and was buried in Lexington Cemetery. Baylis died January 17, 1932, and was buried beside his wife.
