Mary McCoy was born in Ireland and came to the US with her family in 1831. After arriving in the US, she went to work for George Parish, a major landowner in Ogdensburg NY as a cook. When she wanted to visit her parents, she rode horseback through the woods on a bridle path, guided to her destination by marks blazed on the trees. She was married to Alexander Sterling who died before 1860, leaving her with eight children. She ran a rooming house in Macomb for many years until it burned in 1894, at which time she was an invalid. Her brother Alex McCoy took care of her after the fire.

She is believed to be buried in Pierce's Corners cemetery in Macomb, St. Lawrence County, NY where other members of her family including unmarried children were buried.
