St. Lawrence Republican - September 1, 1838

On Friday the 24th ult., about 2 clock, PM, Mr. Wm McCoy, a very intelligent and worthy young man, was drowned in Black Lake, off Mineral Point, in attempting to leap from a small boat to the Steamboat Rossie, of which he had been acting as a mate during the past season. Before relief could be offered the unfortunate man sunk to rise no more. Although search was immediately commenced, the body was not found until about 10 o'clock A.M, on Saturday the 25th ult., when it was conveyed to the village of Heuvelton and an inquest held by Coroner Searle, the jury of which returned a verdict of "accidental drowning". The deceased has left an aged father and a numerous family of relatives and friends to lament his untimely death. We understand that the deceased was to have been married in a few days to a worthy young lady of this place.
