Hans was a farmer who lived near Wendell. He also was the manager for thte Farmers Co-operative Shipping Company. He held several positions of trust, such as assessor and town clerk for a number of years. He was also an excellent fiddler.

He was married three times. His first wife, Kari Formo, died at age 34, leaving five children. His second wife was Kjersti Viger, with whom he had two children. His third wife was Louise Hjermundrud.

According to his obituary, he could turn a summersault at the age of fifty without touching the ground with his hands and would "land standing on his feet, a feat very few, except trained acrobats can do, even in their youth. After moving to Minneapolis he wrote fire and cyclone insurance and was vice president of the Jordan Tool Machine Company His temperament was of the optimistic and genial kind. He was a good player on the violin and a good singer. He was a good husband and father, a true and loyal friend, a good neighbor and a valuable citizen to the community in which he resided. Blessed be his memory."
