`William was the son of Elijah Rayl and Katherine Cooper. He first married Theodosia Brown on 28 December, 1853 in Indiana, and they had five children: James C., Willard, Charles, Catherine, and Joseph A. Rayl. Theodosia died 7 October, 1864. William next married Margaret Rachel Johnson 1869 in Indiana, they had no children.
