Columbus Elbert and his brother Bartow dropped the t in Johnston and became Johnson sometime around 1900. Their father died when they were under the age of five and their mother married James McDonald who raised them.
Elbert 85, of Durant, died in a Plant City hospital. He was a member of Bloomingdale Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Edwin & Woodrow of Durant, Fred of Gasport, N.Y.; three daughters, Gladys Shiver of Valrico, Willow Lockard of Durant, and Gertrude Stewart of Tampa; One brother, Crawford McDonald of Arcadia; one sister Pearl Henderson of Durant.
