He worked as a Brakeman/ Conductor on freights with Northern Pacific, Southern Pacific and Northwest Pacific.
Art was also a musician, he played the cornet in a band in Roseburg, he had his own band, it was known as the "Art Redifer Jazz Band" this was during the Roaring 20's , Art played in Washington, Oregon and California. His move to Los Angeles was due to him joining California State Service as a Deputy Labor Commissioner,(enforcing labor laws), he was employed at the State Department of Industrial Relations from 1929 to 1955 in Los Angeles and Sacramento, he retired in 1955.

Memorial services for retired state deputy labor commissioner Robert A. Redifer, a resident of the Sacramento area for 35 years, will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Christ United Methodist Church, 7480 24th St.
Mr. Redifer, 85, a deputy commissioner in Los Angeles from 1929 to 1938 and here from 1938 until his retirement about 1955, died yesterday.
A native of Missouri, he grew up in Oregon and worked there and in the Bay area as a brakeman, engineer and conductor for Southern Pacific Company, before entering state service.
He was a member of the California State Employees Association and the California Retired State Employees Association.
Mr. Redifer leaves his widow, Lucile J. of Sacramento, sons, Milton A. of San Bernadino, and Harold D. of Fair Oakes; and three grandchildren.
Services are being directed by Harry A. Nauman & Son, Funeral Chapel.Robert was cremated, 7/16/1973

Robert and Mary Edna "Matie " Gallup were married 22 June 1910, in Riddle ,Oregon, by brother-in-law Rev. Delbert Loree. Two sons were born, Harold Delbert Redifer , Dec 11, 1911, Milton Arthur Redifer June 21, 1914. Robert and Matie were married over twenty years, they divorced and both remarried. Robert married second Lucille J. Johnson.(1896-1982).
Matie married to Howard Friddle and after his death to unknown Swisher.
