Stephen was the husband of Mary (Hardesty) Mathew Arnold (1815-1901). They were married in 1883 in Furnas County, Nebraska. Stephen was married two other times. His first wife was Mary Rolfe (Whitehead) Arnold (1819-1879). Stephen married Mary Whitehead on April 19, 1838 in Jersey, Licking, Ohio. He had at least ten children with his first wife including: Seth, Charles, Wade, Lucinda, Sophia, Stephen, Tuthill Parker, Mary Geneva, Alfred and Helen "Nellie" Arnold. Stephen's second wife was Esther J. (Loomis) Crommett Parris Arnold Griffis (1818-1891). Stephen and Esther were married on May 5, 1880 in Furnas County, Nebraska. They were divorced by 1883. Stephen was the son of Charles Arnold and Elizabeth (Wolf) Arnold. He was a Veteran of Co. H, 7th Iowa Infantry in the Civil War. Stephen enlisted in the same regiment as he son had served in previously from July 1861 to November 1861. His son was wounded and died at the age of 18.
