ABELS, CHARLES A., SR.

Our loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away on Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at the age of 86, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Springfield, graduated from Springfield High School and attended Southeastern Louisiana University. Growing up in Springfield, he became an avid and skilled hunter and was inducted into the Wall 2 Wall Deer Hunter's Hall of Fame. At age 24, he was elected to serve as Livingston parish tax assessor, a position he held for the following 52 years, distinguishing himself as one of the state's longest serving elected officials. He served as president of the Louisiana Assessor's Association and was a Certified Louisiana Assessor, a distinguished honor received from the International
Association of Assessing Officers. His father, Alexander Richard Abels, son of Henry Abels, whose father, Dietrich Abels, immigrated to America in 1811, fought in the Mexican War and later opened a clothing store in New Orleans before settling on a farm near Ponchatoula. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Kathleen Starnes Abels, Baton Rouge; a stepdaughter and her husband, Leah and Webb Wartelle, Gonzales; a stepson and his wife, Keith and Theresa Lee, Belton, Texas; a grandson, Charles A. Abels III and his wife, Jordan, Denham Springs; granddaughters, D'Ette Abels Solie, Batchelor, Leslie Monk and Rebecca Abels Baham, Hammond;
stepgranddaughter, Heather Lee; stepgrandsons, Brett and Jordan Haddad; a sister, Lillian Abels Maurin, Springfield; brother, Harold Abels, Springfield; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles A. "Charlie" Abels Jr.; an infant great-grandson; his father, Alexander Richard Abels, Sr.; mother, Rubye Pusey Abels; brothers, Alexander Jr., Wilson, Raymond, Jacob, Edward and Ralph Abels; and sisters, Helen Abels Easterly and Katherine Abels Fayard.
Pallbearers will be Jordan Haddad, Richard "Richie" Abels, Nathan Wall, Jason Abels, Bruce Gregoire and David Abels. Honorary pallbearers are Calvin C. "Trey" Fayard III and Robert "Bobby" Maurin. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Springfield where visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, until religious service at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Emile Tosso. Interment will be in Springfield Cemetery.
