Thomas Cuttle's Body
Brought Home From Litchfield Last Night
The remains of Thomas Cuttle, who was killed by falling from the head-end of Wabash train No. 12 Wednesday night near Litchfield, arrived in this city Thursday on No. 50. There was a large crowd of friends of the family at the station and the casket was taken to the home of his father, Michael Cuttle, 609 North Stone street.
From the testimony given at the coroner's inquest it appears that young Cuttle got on the train at East St. Louis with three companions. The space on the head-end was hardly big enough to accommodate them all and about a mile and a half from Litchfield while the train was running at a high rate of speed Cuttle tried to look ahead and fell from the train. The body when found indicated that he struck on his head causing a fracture of the skull. The boys notified the trainmen of the accident when the train reached Litchfield and Conductor Bump, who was coming north with train No. 90, was instructed to keep a look-out. He rode the pilot into Litchfield, but failed to see anything of the boy. Roadmaster Welch took a switch engine and found Cuttle in a dying condition about a mile and a half south of Litchfield. The remains were taken to that town where the inquest was held. Michael Cuttle went there Thursday and returned last night with the body.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Mr. and Mrs. Cuttle have been peculiarly afflicted in the loss of their children, this being the third son killed by the cars within a few years.
