Luther Litchfield was the son of Elisha Litchfield who according to census record came from New Hampshire. According to the will of the wife of Ensign Litchfield, the brother named Elisha went west and was never heard from again.

Luther first married Mary Ann (May) Short. They had at least two children, Louisa America Litchfield in 1842-1843 who married Charles Crump and died at only 26 years old and Luch Litchfield 1844-1916.

Given that Elisha was born in 1847, the first child of Luther Litchfield and Rebecca Blain, the same year that Mary Ann passed, it appears that Luther and Rebecca were together in early 1847.
