Betty was born in Illinois, the daughter of Wilbur L. Updike and Mary Swanson. On January 2, 1920, in Detroit, she married William H. Dorrance, the son of William H. Dorrance III and Harriet Hall.

Betty's remains were taken to Michigan and buried in Forest Hill Cemetery on 2 Jul 1987.
