Huddleston, Minerva Tennessee – Cookeville City Cemetery Cookeville, TN
b. 9 January 1859, Putnam Co., TN
d. 2 October 1947, TN
Husband: James Anthony Carlen
Father: Isaac Alexander Huddleston
Mother: Betsy Elizabeth Carr (Kerr)
"Mammy" Carlen died at 11:30 this morning at her home at Broad and Dixie. Known affectionately as "Mammy" throughout the Upper Cumberland section of the state, she was the wife of James A. Carlen I.
She was the former Miss Minerva Tennessee Huddleston, daughter of the late Isaac and Elizabeth Carr Huddleston pioneer settlers of the Rock Springs section of Putnam County.
Mrs. Carlen came to Cookeville 65 years ago with her husband and 2 children when he was appointed a deputy sheriff. Later he was elected circuit and criminal court clerk, a position he held for 12 years.
One of the well known characteristics of "Mammy" Carlen was to joke about her age, never telling it and clinging seriously to the idea that people are never older than they feel. She was however one of Cookeville's oldest residents.
A member of the Methodist Church, Mrs. Carlen took an active part and it is said that she never missed a service until she broke her hip while getting ready to go to a prayer meeting. She outlived 18 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 Friday afternoon at the Cookeville Methodist Church by the Rev. Thornton Fowler and the Rev. Dow Ensor. Burial will be in Cookeville Cemetery.
Survivors include 5 sons, W. R., Algood, Herbert, Herman, and Benton Carlen; 1 daughter, Mrs. Frank Collier, all of Cookeville; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren
