"ELIZABETH "BETTY" FODOR

South Fallsburg, NY

Elizabeth Fodor, a long time resident of South Fallsburg, died peacefully on Friday, June 25, 2010 at the Achieve Rehabilitation & Nursing Home in Liberty, NY after a short illness. She was the widow of Joseph Fodor who was a founding partner in the Fallsburg Iron Works.

Elizabeth, who was most often called Betty by her friends, was born at home on June 3, 1924 in Detroit, MI to Margaret Karell and Stefan Maythenyi. She was the youngest of four children. After her father died, her mother was remarried to John Haydu who was a wonderful stepfather to her.

Elizabeth married Joseph Fodor on January 26, 1946. They were a particularly devoted couple throughout their 58 years of marriage. They moved to South Fallsburg in 1947 following his military service in World War II.

Elizabeth graduated from high school. She studied business and was an excellent bookkeeper and stenographer. She took pride in winning a spelling bee sponsored by the Detroit Free Press and received an engraved dictionary as her prize. She enjoyed playing scrabble and working on the New York Times crossword puzzles. After her children were grown, Elizabeth took courses at the Sullivan County Community College and found a talent for writing and drawing. She was amused to be the "old lady" in her classes. She studied oil painting with Hugo Newman of Smallwood who was a WPA artist during the depression. She loved music and took piano lessons throughout her life.

Elizabeth worked as a secretary at Sullivan County Community College until her retirement and then as the office manager for the Homeowners Association of Vacation Village in Loch Sheldrake. She was a volunteer at the Fallsburg Library, a member of the Auxiliary of the Catskill Regional Medical Center and a member of the National Association of Educational Office Professionals. She was a parishioner at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in South Fallsburg.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean Leshaw of New York City and Hurleyville; four granddaughters: Hannah Leshaw of New York City, Rachel Leshaw of Encinitas, CA, Jesse Robinson Legoff of Cloverdale, VA and Sarah Robinson of No. Bethesda, MD; three great grandsons: Sayief Leshaw, Kaden and Max Legoff; a brother, Carl Maythenyi and his wife, Sherry of Boca Raton, FL; sister-in-law, Elissabeth Maythenyi of Middletown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband; daughter, Susan Margaret Robinson; sister, Margaret Sabo; and brother, Stefan F. Maythenyi.

The family wishes to publicly thank all the wonderful nurses and support staff at the Achieve Nursing Home for the thoughtful and loving care our mother and grandmother received from them. They cared for us as well. Her beloved dog, Shu, was able to visit her there while she was sick. Shu will now be residing in New York City and Hurleyville with Jean. She was adopted from the Rock Hill Animal Shelter where Elizabeth contributed money and supplies throughout the years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the shelter in her name.

Interment of Elizabeth's ashes will be on Friday, July 9, at 11 a.m. in the Sullivan County Veterans' Cemetery on Sunset Road in Liberty, NY. Mother Joan of St. Andrew's will officiate. The family invites Mrs. Fodor's friends and family to join us for the short service and a luncheon reception following at the Community Hall at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Route 42 in South Fallsburg.

Arrangements by Colonial Memorial Funeral Home. For further information, please contact us at (845) 434-7363 or visit www.colonialbryantfuneralhome.com."
