Madeline May Hartman died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at the Linden Court Care Center in North Platte, Nebr., at the age of 85. Memorial services were held Friday, April 23, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Arnold, with Reverends Doug Smith and Gene Purcell officiating. Interment was in the Arnold Cemetery.
She was born October 7, 1918, in Wagner, Nebr. the daughter of the late Clarence S. and Maggie May (Whipple) Chesley. Madeline grew up on a family homestead southwest of Dunning, Nebr., where she graduated from rural school.
On May 19, 1935, Madeline married L. Paul Hartman who was a teacher from 1940 to 1943 she ran the Fairmont Ice Cream Shop at Arnold and from 1943 to 1947 she also worked for Hazel Holub at the Arnold Variety Store. In 1947 Madeline and Paul became part owners in the Arnold Appliance Store and in 1955 they started their family business of Hartman TV. They retired from the business in 1975. She continued to work for 21 years at the Model Cafe in Arnold.
She was a member for over 50 years of the United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star where she was Worthy Matron in 1953 and held the office of Warden for 11 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, on December 26, 1982; two sons, Kenneth Hartman, who died November 12, 2002, and David L. Hartman; a daughter, Fidelis P. Hartman; and four brothers, Everett, Albert, Bill, and Darrell Chesley, and one sister, Vera Johnson.
Madeline is survived by two granddaughters, Barbara Berkevich and Husband Dan, with their daughters, Jessica and Jenna of Burnett, Wis., and Sue Cefalo and husband Mike with daughter Jordan and son Taylor of Jacksonville, N.C.; daughter-in-law Karen Hartman of McCook; three step-grandchildren Wendi Elder of McCook, Mindi Dixon and Nate Nordhausen, both of Wauneta, Nebr.; eight step great-grandchildren; one brother, Ira Chesley, and his wife Lorraine of North Platte, Nebr.; nieces, nephews and friends.
