James Flint was the third of four children born to Benjamin Flint, Jr. (1757-1829) and his second wife Eunice Stowell (1774-1717) of Winchester, Cheshire Co., NH. (The 1860 Flint genealogy notes his date of birth as 11 March 1814, but his age as recorded on his grave marker indicates a birth date of 20 March 1814.) The Flint family has deep roots in New England. Thomas Flint, the immigrant ancestor, was one of the earliest settlers of Salem Village (now Danvers), Essex Co., MA. James grew up on the family's farm in Swanzey, Cheshire Co.

James married three times. He married Martha Fidelia Case (1811-1849)on November 24, 1836 in her hometown of Middleton, Essex Co., MA. The couple had five children, all born in Reading, Middlesex Co.: Elizabeth Maria (b. 1837), Catherine Fidelia (b. 1839), Charles Leavitt (b. 1841), Alfred Porter (b. 1843), and James Allen (b. 1845). After the death of Martha Case Flint in 1849, James moved his family to Danvers where he established a business as a "victualler" or provision dealer.

James took as his second wife Harriet Wheeler Snow (1832-55), daughter of Anthony and Lydia Gilford Snow of Danvers. The couple married in Danvers on September 7, 1851. They had one daughter Harriet Ella, born August 9 1855. The child lived only two months, by which time the young mother had also died.

James's third wife was Mary E. Potter (1828-88) whom he married on November 26, 1857 in her hometown of Pittsfield, Merrimack Co., NH. By 1860 the family had moved to Lynn, Essex Co., MA, where James continued as a "provision dealer." James and Mary had one son, Edwin Snow (b. 1862) who sadly was born and died on April 13, 1862. The last address of James and Mary was 493 Western Ave., Lynn. James Flint died of hepatitis at the age of seventy.
