Obituary
SEYMOUR A. HURD (16 Aug 1821 - 16 Jul 1886)
Newspaper: The Medina Tribune; Thurs, 22 Jul 1886
Surnames: HURD, FROST, SPAULDING
Our community was surprised on Friday last to learn of the sudden death of our townsman, Seymour A. HURD, which occurred at 9:30 on the morning of that day. after a very brief but painful illness with acute peritonetis(sic). The dangerous nature of his sickness was not publicly known until within a few hours before his death. He was universally known and respected, having been in business in Yates nearly forty years, was for many years Town Clerk, and was thus intimately connected with public interests. As a member of the Town Board, all who have been associated with him will bear witness to his ability and genial, agreeable ways.
Deceased was the youngest of twelve children of the honored pioneer family of Isaac HURD, who made his home in this wilderness town in 1817. He was born in Yates, August 16, 1821, and though not a regular pioneer, knew something of life under difficulties in his early days. He was twice married -first to Mary 0. FROST, a sister of Mrs. Joseph SPAULDING, and daughter of Deacon FROST. She died twenty-one years ago, leaving a family of small children - four boys and one girl. Mr. HURD labored hard to educate his children and train them up for positions of honor and usefulness, and today they "rise up and call him blessed." The second companion is sister to Mr. Joseph SPAULDING, and on Sunday afternoon she joined with the five children in the last sad rites to the memory of a loving husband and a kind, indulgent father.
At the funeral we noticed an elegant floral pillow, arranged for the children, inscribed with the impressive word, "Father." The offering, with its many tinted flowers, its little wreath of ripened grain and the impressive inscription, speaks volumes. The floral shoe, the gift of the ladies of Yates, was also an appropriate offering. The community universally sympathize with the bereaved family, and are sad at the seeming untimely death of a neighbor and friend.
B. Yates, July 19, 1886.
