L.N. "Smokie" Chivers Honored at Saturday Funeral Services

Funeral services were held Saturday for Lowell Nathan (Smokie) Chivers, 55, who died April 12 in Salt Lake City following a lingering illness.

Prayer at the mortuary was by El Ray Duncan. Prelude and postlude music at the services was furnished by a nephew, Steven Duncan. The services were held in the Unitah Stake Center, under the direction of the Davis Ward Bishopric with Bishop Marvin Jackson officiating.

Mark Duncan, nephew of the deceased, opened the services by singing, "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine", following was the opening prayer offered by Kay Merkley.

Bishop Jackson read the obituary and speakers were Art Boren, Arden Stewart and Judge Lawrence Perry, Bishop Jackson offered consoling remarks. Dorothy Luck sang, "Kentucky" and was accompanied by Mark Duncan on the guitar. Mr. Duncan closed the services singing, "In the Garden". Benediction was by Ervin Simper.

Pallbearers were Giles, Weldon, Dewayne Chivers, Bob and Carl Richardson, and Scott Merkley. Glen Chivers offered the dedicatory prayer at the grave. Mr. Chivers was buried at the Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Chivers was born to Nathan Charles and Mattie Collier Chivers [on] November 23, 1917. They proceeded him in death. He married Mary [Eva] Ellsworth and was later divorced. Two* children were born of this union, Lola who is deceased, and Sandra.

He married Donna Richardson Spencer in 1946 at Leadville, Colorado. Mr. Chivers is survived by his widow, Donna; two sons, Earnest and Wesley, all of Salt Lake City; one daughter, Sandra of Arkansas.

He is also survived by three step-children, Mrs. Otis (Lavon) Mullanex, John L. and Jay Spencer, all of Salt Lake City; 12 grandchildren; one brother, Glen of Rock Springs; fours sisters, Mrs Ervin (Eva) Simper and Mrs. Arden (Donna) Stewart, both of Vernal; Mrs. Martin (Clela) Bolton, Provo; and Mrs. El Ray (Bonnie) Duncan of Neola.

Out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Chivers and Weldon Chivers of Rock Springs; Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy James, Clearfield; Mr. and Mrs. Giles Chivers and Mr. and Mrs. Darris Chivers, all of Salt Lake City.

Mr. and Mrs. Martin Bolton, Judy Marquta, and Mardie Hatch, all of Provo; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Chivers, Hayden; Mrs. and Mrs. Guy Stewart, Mrs and Mrs. El Ray Duncan, Mark, Steve Keith, Lorie, Cory and Merrian Duncan, all of Neola; Dora and Jennie Cameron, Salt Lake City; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Spencer, Bill Cronk and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dudley.
