Vernal Express August 11, 1948: Mrs. Mattie Chivers Dies Suddenly At Home in Davis

The sudden death of Mattie Collier Chivers Thursday morning marks the end of the life of an active LDS church member and mother. Death occurred at her home in Davis, due to a heart attack.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the Davis ward chapel. Bishop Wallace E. Slaugh conducted. Speakers were Jessie A. Haws and President Archie Johnson. Lige Jackson opened with prayer. The prelude and postlude were rendered by Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Goodrich. A chorus from the Davis ward Relief Society sang, "Sister Thou Art Kind and Lovely", followed by the song, "In The Garden" by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Goodrich and two daughter. Marilyn Robbins sang "Wonderful Mother of Mine". The chorus sang, "I Need Thee Every Hour". Benediction was by Bishop Alfred Simper.

Burial was in Vernal Memorial park with Parley Goodrich of Tridell dedicating the grave.

Mrs. Chivers was born February 5, 1892, in Vernal, the daughter of Joab Collier and Theodocia Keeler Collier. She was one of a family of 16 children. She attended grade school in Davis and the old Uintah Academy. In (April 9) 1909, she became the wife of Nathan Charles Chivers.

Mrs. Chivers has worked actively in all the organization of the church, having taught in Sunday School, Primary and Relief Society. She was First counselor in the YWMIA three years and Relief Society president 14 years. At the time of her death she was secretary of the girl's organization in her ward.

The following children survive her: Mrs. Eva Simper, Acael Chivers and Marvin Chivers, Vernal; Lowell Chivers, Fruita, Colorado; Beulah Wood, Provo, Utah; Glen Chivers and Donna Slaugh, Fruita, Colorado; Clela Hatch and Bonny Chivers, Vernal. Also the following brothers: Joseph, J. Edwin, Walter, Frank, and Karl Collier all of Vernal; Jack, California; and Theodore, Salt Lake City, Utah. Also the following sisters: May Carpenter, Murray; Clara Richardson, Pleasant Grove; Nellie Richardson, and Mabel Winward of Vernal.
