The Monroe Watchman, Thursday, August 17, 1911

Hugh Allen

After months of suffering Mr. Hugh Allen died at his home in Union last Sunday morning, August 13, 1911, at 11 o'clock, of tuberculosis. Had he lived until next November he would have been 65 years of age. Mr. Allen was born in this county. He enlisted in the Confederate Army when but a boy, serving in Bryan's Battery, and his comrades testify that he was a brave and dutiful soldier. He was twice married and the father of thirteen children.

His first wife was a Miss Pitzer and his second wife, who survives him, was a Miss Hall. Mr. Allen was a member of the Baptist church and was comforted amid his last sufferings by the Christian's hope of a happy life beyond the grave.

Rev. J. M. Sedgwick conducted funeral services at the home last Monday, after which the remains of the deceased were taken to Zenith and interred in the Crosier Cemetery there, Rev. J. E. Brown conducting the services at the grave. Mr. Allen is survived by two brothers, Messrs. William H. and Newton Allen of near Union, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah J. West.

Hugh Allen was the son of Marvel and Susanna Sullivan Allen.
