Virginius Walker Jones, son of Rev. John Cargill Jones and the former Miss Mary Ann Walker, was born in the bounds of the new family home in Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama on July 17th 1844. His parents were cultured, and reared in affluence in Virginia, where their ancestors had resided for generations and moved to Alabama in early 1844.

Studying at Alabama University when the Civil War broke out; Virginius enlisted as a Private on March 15th 1862 into Co. B, 44th Alabama Infantry Regiment and was later appointed 1st Lieutenant on 22nd of June 1863. He was wounded in the arm at Gettysburg, on July 2nd 1863. He rejoined his regiment at Lookout Valley, October 1863, fighting through Dandridge, January 16th 1864.

Lieut. Virginius Walker Jones was mortally wounded at the Battle of Wilderness, Virginia and died on May 6th 1864, in his 19th year of his age. Virginius was buried on the battlefield where he fell. Later, after the war, his brother recovered his remains and brought him home to Camden; where he was laid to rest in the Confederate section of Camden City Cemetery.
