Pauline Cox was the daughter of Charles William Cox and his wife, Sarah E. Wyles Cox. Charles William Cox was of Hardeman Co., TN (near Bolivar) and his wife, Sarah E. Wyles Cox was of Pontotoc, MS. Her father (See FAG Memorial #50479560) was a Confederate War hero. Pauline Cox was the second wife of James Nathaniel Mitchem, a hide trader at that time, as was Pauline's father. They were married in 1891 in Carlsbad, Eddy Co., New Mexico and moved to what was then "Indian Territory" in Oklahoma where they remained until Oklahoma attained statehood in 1907. In 1900, they were living in El Reno, Canadian Co., OK. He was a real estate broker, and she worked as a florist. From 1913 to 1916, they homesteaded on 160 acres of land they bought in Kiowa Co., OK before returning once again to El Reno., OK. It has been reported that in 1919, James Nathaniel Mitchem was a front seat passenger in a taxicab in downtown El Reno, Oklahoma; that the taxicab while attempting to round a curve, rolled over onto James Nathaniel Mitchem's arm, almost severing it. He was hospitalized and his arm surgically amputated. He developed tetanus and died as a result. They had no children together, although James Nathaniel had a son and two daughters from his first marriage.
