Alexander Fletcher Woodward was the son of Henry Hyden Woodward and his wife Elizabeth A. Ely. On 19 January 1860, he married Sarah Jain Campbell, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Stubblefield Campbell. They were the parents of 11 children: Elizabeth Eleanor, 1860-1884; Elizabeth E., 1862-1944; Amelia Henrietta (Etta), 1862-1937; Caledona "Dona", 1866-1942; David Morgan Woodward, 1868-1940; Henry Hyden Woodward, 1870-1924; Robert Lee Woodward, 1873-1962; Lydia Moriah, 1874-1913; William Calhoon Woodward, 1875-1943; Myrtle Annie, 1875-1898; and James Franklin Woodward, 1880-1891.
On 20 April 1902, Alexander Fletcher Woodward was killed by a neighbor, J.N. Ogle over a land dispute. He was found dying and unable to speak by another neighbor, James Cummins who heard the shot. He was close to 63 years old.
