Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Schuylkill County Pennsylvania, by Samuel T. Wiley, edited by Henry W. Ruoff, published by Rush, West and Company 1893 - Philadelphia, Pa, Page 337:

"Balthaser Bock was born on March 30, 1746, in Aide Hassan, in Grafschaft, Hanan, Germany, and when eight years old was brought to the colonies by his father (who subsequently was a soldier in the French and Indian war). The family settled near Hamburg, Berks county, and a short time afterward his mother died in Philadelphia. After the death of his mother Mr. Bock married on October 17, 1780, Susan Margaretha Bolig. Although he was lame, he served as a volunteer in the Revolutionary war one and one-half years, and now lies buried at McKeansburg, Schuylkill county. He died January 17, 1827, His only daughter, wife of Henry Koch, was born July 19, 1797, and died December 12, 1886."

"Balthaser Bock was born, in 1746, in Aide Hassan Grafschaft, Hanan, Germany. He came to this country, 1754, with his father, the latter engaging in the French and Indian War, 1755. The family settled in Windsor Township, Berks County. Balthasar was sold to a farmer near Pinegrove to pay his passage. Serving his time he rejoined the family on the other side of the Blue Mountains. Although a lame man, he served in the Revolutionary War. He settled in McKeansburg, where he died, 1827, and is buried there. He was a man of remarkable energy and has many descendants in Schuylkill County. Baltzer Bock bought a tract of land, 1791, from Peter Orwig for eight hundred and fifty pounds. It was part of the original John Webb tract, patented 1750, situated near what is now McKeansburg."

"Grandfather Henry Koch …married Susanna Bock, the only daughter of Balthaser Bock, who came to this country from Prussia with his parents when he was a small boy. He was born on March 30, 1746, in Alde Hassen, in the Countship of Hannah Balthaser Bock served with the Continental army in the Revolutionary war."

"Baltzer Bock, served under Washington in the Revolutionary war. and participated in a number of battles under that renowned chieftain, notably that of Trenton, which resulted in the capture of the Hessians, who there confronted Washington's army."

"Baltzer Bock, mention of whom may be found in the historical volume, founded the first English-speaking school in Schuylkill county, this school being opened in 1794 at McKeansburg. He donated land for educational and religious purposes, the church which his beneficence founded being opened for religious worship a few years later than the school."
