Leaving law enforcement in 1954, he moved to Ropesville where he farmed and owned an insurance agency. He sold out and retired to Colorado in 1970. In 1975, he moved to San Antonio and became a successful commercial contractor working for major oil companies. In 1993, he retired again and moved to Lubbock.

For many years Sam was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a troop founder and leader. He belonged to the local Lions club for a number of years. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in the Meadow, Texas Masonic Lodge and later made a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason in the Masonic Temple at El Paso.
