MRS. MARJORIE SMITH, 100, of Tamms, IL, passed away at 4:02 p.m., November 14, 2006 in Daystar Care Center in Cairo, IL. Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 3, 1906 in Augusta, Ark. to the late Ernest and Ophelia Friar. After the death of her parents in 1926, she moved to Tamms and married the late Jeff Ford in 1927. After the death of Mr. Ford, she met and married the late Mr. Elmer Smith.
She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She joined Trinty Baptist Church in Tamms for a short while, then united with Second Baptist Church in Tamms. She remained a faithful member until her health failed. Mrs. Smith was the oldest of the original members of Second Baptist Church. Her favorite song was, "This Little Light of Mine." Mrs. Smith loved the Lord with all her heart, mind, soul and strength.
She served the church as the Superintendent of Sunday School, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher, member and vice-president of the missionary society, and was the oldest church mother. She was faithful until death and there is now laid up for her a crown of righteousness. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are a cousin and a nephew; nieces and nephews by marriage; a special friend who cared for her as if she were her own mother, Mrs. Marjorie La Grone; and a host of good friends and neighbors.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Second Baptist Church in Tamms with the Rev. James E. Anderson, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Heights Cemetery in Mounds, IL. Heavenly Gates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. --Courtesy of The Southern Illinoisan, 11/15/2006.
