James D. Black, 71, of 3208 Troy rd., died about 2 a.m. Friday in Mercy Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Springfield, Sept. 11, 1893, the son of Joseph King and Mary Anthony Black. Before retirement in Oct. 1964, Mr. Black was owner and operator of the Murray-Black Co., and was also owner and operator of the National Knife Co. in York, Pa.
He was a graduate of the Annapolis Naval Academy in 1914, and spent many years in Africa as head of an exporting company there. He returned to Springfield 11 years ago to manage the Murray-Black Co. Mr. Black was also a member of the Springfield Country Club.
Suvivors include his widow, Edith Mae Davied Black, who he married 26 years ago; one daughter, by a previous marriage, Mrs. Franklin Bousquet, Jr., of Savannah, Ga.; four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. John McDorman of Atlanta, Ga. and several nieces and nephews.
His body was taken to the Littleton Funeral Home where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Jerome M. Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery.
