Lima Sports Leader Dies

Lima lost one of its most colorful sports figures Wednesday when Arthur Elmer Marshall, 82, of 434 W. Kibby-st, died of a heart attack.

Mr. Marshall collapsed in a downtown sandwich shop and was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Rita's hospital at 2:30 p.m.

Allen-co coroner Dr. T. J. Talbott said death was caused by a heart attack.

Mr. Marshall competed in bicycle races with Barney Oldfield and appeared in many trapshoots with Annie Oakley at the turn of the century. He was one of the organizers of the old Lima Gun club and served as its president. Mr. Marshall retired from the Ohio Oil Co. in 1938 after 48 years of service. He was a division superintendent.

He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America lodge and the National Trapshooters-assn.

Born May 30, 1868, in Perrysburg, Ind., he was a resident of Lima for 60 years.

Survivors include a son, Ralph S. Marshall, 118 1/2 S. Elizabeth-st; a daughter, Mrs. C. L. Laughlin, 1007 E. Eureka-st; two grandsons, Marshall Phillips, 434 W. Kibby-st, and Donald Laughlin, 1007 E. Eureka-st; four brothers, Alan and Ulrey, both of Silver Lake, Ind.; Judd of Mentone, Ind., and Lewis of Laketon, Ind., and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Chiles and Son funeral home. The Rev. Vernon Van Buren will officiate, and burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home until after services.
