Greeta was the oldest of nine children, four of whom died young from childhood diseases. She helped care for her younger siblings and boarders at her parents' home from a young age. She was very close to her sisters Sarah and Susan who both died young.

Greeta married her first husband, Alexander McDonald and had a son, Nelson Hugh. Alexander left the family a short time later. Greeta and Alexander divorced about 1924.

Greeta subsequently married Albert Edward Chatfield. They had 3 daughters. Albert also adopted Nelson Hugh as his son.

Greeta played piano and was a good cook. The family maintained a large garden on family property in Hartland where Greeta would do a great deal of canning and food preservation. She actively maintained close family ties with her cousins, aunts, and uncles, including close relationships with her Canadian cousins, Millie and Leila.

Greeta suffered from a heart valve issue her entire life. Eventually it claimed her life at the young age of 46. She died at home with her family nearby.
